Social justice miseducation in our schools
Philosophical differences in regards to what constitutes social justice and if it should be discussed in the classroom has caused a major divide among people. Some believe that a community is best when our children are taught about social justice issues, but teachers should be careful they don't overshadow their student's parents values in what they say. In the article I read, the author argues that schools shouldn't be a place where social agencies are born, but they should be left to teach the standard subjects of education like math, reading and writing. This is very true, but I also agree there should be some balance in our schools as well. As long as teachers a careful with student's and supply them with facts in stead of hard opinions, student's will be able to learn skills like how to decipher bias and come up their own interpretations. I think a lot of social justice issues carry a major political aspect in nature. Using these topics in the classroom might negatively influence people and the cultural beliefs that some believe in. This shouldn't be a deterrent to discussion social justice issues like race, gender identity and sexuality in the classroom. Young women and men should be well aware of these types of issues in the world, especially when they are a few short years from entering into that very world. Philosophers continue to argue that free speech and debate are essential parts of personal intellectual growth because it develops habits of using factual information to support their opinions. I agree with this philosophy and how education is beating around the bush towards more sensitive topics instead of having student's face these issues head on with proven research. I also agree that another way for educators to teach our youth about social equality is by modeling it themselves. Rules in the classroom should be equal and consistent throughout. By displaying these acts in real time can teach student's about equality in the class environment.
